I am delighted to welcome you to Blackheath Bluecoat Church of England School’s website.
Blackheath Bluecoat Church of England School has been serving the children of Greenwich for over 300 years since its foundation as the Blue Coat School for Girls in 1700. The history of the school is well documented in a dedicated micro-site which you can access by clicking here. Following in the Christian traditions of its founders, the school now seeks to provide excellence in education as a mixed comprehensive school, respecting the unique contribution which every individual can make to the community, and placing this within a framework which embraces the highest possible academic aspirations whilst accepting individual differences in ability, aptitude and level of skill.
At the heart of the school is its Christian foundation, where the Christian faith is shown through every aspect of its life, particularly in the quality of the relationships it engenders and promotes. The school values diversity and is sensitive to the range of traditions and cultures represented in the community it serves. The Governing Body allocates 180 places each year to children of all abilities from a wide range of social and religious backgrounds, and is also proud to offer a large Sixth Form, providing the opportunity for an all-through education for young people for the duration of their secondary school years.
In January 2009, the school federated with Saint Cecilia’s, Wandsworth Church of England School, a highly successful, popular and oversubscribed school in the London Borough of Wandsworth, which specialises in the learning and teaching of Music and Mathematics. As the lead school in the Federation, Saint Cecilia’s, Wandsworth provides professional leadership through my own appointment as the Executive Headteacher of both schools, and the appointment of an Associate Headteacher to manage the day-to-day running of the school. The Federation also allows for additional staff support to be given by Saint Cecilia’s, Wandsworth to Blackheath Bluecoat Church of England School in order to help raise academic standards still further. Saint Cecilia’s, Wandsworth’s website can be viewed at www.saintcecilias.wandsworth.sch.uk
Blackheath Bluecoat Church of England School was awarded specialist status in September 2008 and now specialises in the learning and teaching of Mathematics and Computing. The Governing Body has recently invested in creating four state-of-the-art ICT Suites, a wireless network giving Internet access across the entire site, and a new Library and Information Centre, providing a wide range of printed and virtual material to support our pupils’ learning.
The school is a well-ordered community, providing a secure, structured environment for learning. As well as excellent standards of learning and teaching, we offer a wide range of curriculum enrichment and extra-curricular activities, and pupils are encouraged to remain on the school premises after the school day has ended in order to take advantage of these opportunities.
Blackheath Bluecoat Church of England School is changing, developing and rapidly improving, and parents, staff, pupils and the immediate community are becoming increasingly proud of their local secondary school. If you wish to contact us to discuss any aspect of our work, or would like to arrange a tour of the school, please telephone (020) 8269 4300 or e-mail info@bbcs.greenwich.sch.uk
